Come and explore New Zealand’s southern-most Great Walk and discover its rich history. This activity involves maintenance on historic sawmilling machines around Port William and Maori Beach.

Tasks include vegetation clearance, cleaning down old machinery and then applying metal preservative to help slow the deterioration of these important relics.

What to expect

Fitness/skills: Medium. This trip involves walking for extended lengths of time and carrying heavy tools and equipment. You must be capable of getting in and out of a small boat confidently.

Accommodation: At Port William Hut. Separate cooking facilities and a shower are available.

Pickup/drop off location: Meet at the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre, Stewart Island/Rakiura on Tuesday 6 March at 10.30 am, returning to same location around 3.00 pm on Tuesday 13 March.

Volunteers will need to make their own travel arrangements to and from Stewart Island/Rakiura.

Cost: $120 per person – contribution towards food and accommodation.
